Tallah – Matriphagy

Do you get targeted emails offering records you need in your collection? I get them all the time.

Every. Damn. Day.

I get emails from record stores, labels, and Discogs offering albums old and new. And those stupid emails work on me because I click and order more often than not.

The info about this record was sent to me in an email from Earache Records and it looked so intriguing that I had to order it.

I’m a sucker, I know.

Matriphagy is nu-metal. It is new nu-metal.

This album is very much the sound of the late 90s and early 2000s. The influence of Korn, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Mudvayne, etc. is abundantly clear. I graduated high school in 1999, so this sound has a special place in my heart.

Vocally, Matriphagy is equal parts screams, guttural growls, singing, and MCing. The vocals drift between the different styles effortlessly and each style is solidly good. Not great, but good.

The bounce between screaming and singing that is present on this record is very much similar to the sound on Mudvayne’s first couple of albums.

Heavy and fast double bass drums, DJ mixing and scratching, high-speed technical guitar solos, and low-end pang-y bass lines are over Matriphagy. It is nu-metal plain and simple.

This record does not break any kind of new ground and that’s fine. It scratches an itch I didn’t know I had. It is not an homage to the late 90s and early 2000s, it is a continuation.

My favorite track: Cottonmouth
